Why Blockchain technology is a game changer in Gaming.

Happy new year everyone!
As the new year starts I wanted to share some thoughts on why I do what I do. I’ve been working in the video game industry for 25 years or so. And I’ve always loved two things in particular, multiplayer games and competitive gaming which of course comes hand in hand. On my “gamer” side, this is what I like to play. On my game developer side I’ve always loved to bring some form of innovation to already existing genres. In particular UGC (user generated content) because for me building and owning digital content has always been something fascinating. This is why I believe Blockchain is a game changer in gaming.
We are still early, very early, but blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionize the way that games are played and monetized by giving users true ownership of their in-game assets.
One of the main benefits of blockchain-based games is that players can truly own the items and currency they acquire within the game. In traditional online games, players may invest a significant amount of time and money into acquiring virtual items, but they do not truly own them. They are simply granted a license to use them within the game, and the game developer retains ultimate control over them.
With blockchain technology, players can trade, sell, or even hold onto their assets outside of the game, potentially creating a secondary market for in-game items. This also means that players could make a profit on their gaming investments.
Yes, we could argue that this is possible today with existing platforms such as steam and external skins markets such as Dmarket, but this is limited and centralized. I even imagine some of these platforms adopting blockchain some way or another.
In the non gaming industry, an analogy could be made by pointing out how Ebay was launched and conceived, in its early days (today is much more than this) it was a platform that allowed users to sell assets they own to other people without intermediaries. Basically the first global NFT trading platform for real assets! Imagine the future where digital assets will be at the very least one trillion more than real world assets, the Ebay’s of the future could be platforms that trade gaming assets!
Blockchain in gaming is only going to grow, mark my words, in 5 to 10 years there will be virtually no indie games that don’t feature some form of blockchain integration.
